IGA Canada Expansion

IGA is an American brand of grocery stores that operate as franchises in over 30 countries. In Canada, IGA is owned by Sobeys Inc., the second largest food retailer in Canada. IGA carries grocery and food products from the Sobeys-owned private label compliments. IGA is made up of a group of independent grocers, with the brand operating primarily in Quebec. However, there are still IGA stores located in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.

Sobeys head office is located in
115 King Street
Stellarton, Nova Scotia
B0K 1S0.

In addition to the primary IGA moniker, there are also IGA Extra stores, which are larger and carry more merchandise. Whereas IGA locations stick to the standard offerings of grocery stores, IGA Extra stores also include such extras as:

  • Pharmacy
  • Bakery
  • Bank
  • Bistro
  • Post Office

IGA Environmental Initiatives

IGA operators are committed to making a positive impact on the environment. As such, IGA has worked on many environmental initiatives starting as far back as 2008 with Quebec’s IGA owners’ Fonds Éco IGA. This fund allocates finances to projects that aim to converse, protect, and promote sustainable environmental practices. Since 2008, the fund has finances over 2,500 projects across Quebec and New Brunswick.

IGA is also leading the way in incorporating sustainable practices in their operations. In 2018, they awarded the first refrigerated home delivery van that is 100% electric to one of their IGA merchants. In 2019 they also started a pilot project allowing customers to use reusable containers in-store.

IGA Online

IGA’s website, www.iga.net, offers a lot of help information and guides on how to make the best use of the products customers purchase at their stores. You can also find IGA’s weekly sales flyer online. New sales go into effect on Thursdays and end on Wednesdays. Customers can also sign up for the My IGA newsletter for further promotions and discounts.

IGA also offers a free mobile app available for download from Apple Store and Google Play. The app allows customers to buy groceries online, browse recipes, create shopping lists, and collect My IGA stamps, which can be used towards the purchase of future products.
